Adenotonsillar hypertrophy may be a life threatening pathology because of chronic upper airway obstruction. In the literature there are many studies on chronic effects of upper airway obstruction, however few articles about the effects of acute upper airway obstruction caused by adenotonsillary hypertrophy have been cited. In this article cardiopulmonary performance, blood gases values, roentgenographic features in a case of acute adenotonsillar hypertrophy with respiratory failure which necessitated urgent adenotonsillectomy was presented. It was emphasized that urgent adenotonsillectomy is an effective treatment modality in acute upper airway obstruction caused by adenotonsillar hypertrophy.

Tonsil ve adenoid dokusunun hipertrofisine bağlı üst hava yolunun belirgin biçimde ve uzun süreli blokajı; akut, hayatı tehdit edici hava yolu obstrüksiyonuna dönüşebilir. Literatürde uzun süreli üst hava yolu obstrüksiyonuna bağlı kardiyopulmoner değişiklikler yoğun bir şekilde tartışılırken, akut adenotonsiller hipertrofiye bağlı üst hava yolu obstrüksiyonunun oluşturduğu etkiler az tartışılmıştır. Bu yazıda akut adenotonsiller obstrüksiyonu ile başvuran ve acil serviste entübasyonu takiben ameliyathaneye alınıp acil adenotonsillektomi uygulanan bir olguda kardiyopulmoner performans, kan gazı değerleri ve röntgenografik bulgular gözden geçirildi. Akut mekanik obstrüksiyona neden olan adenotonsil hipertrofilerinin tedavisinde acil adenotonsillektominin oldukça etkili bir tedavi sekli olduğu bir olgu nedeniyle vurgulandı ve literatür bilgileri gözden geçirildi.
