Purpose: In this study the effect of chronic alcohol consumption on pancreas mast cells of rats was investigated at light microscopic levels.

Materials and Methods: The study was performed on male Wistar albino rats. The experimental group was fed with a modified liquid diet (MLD) containing 7.2 % ethanol for 2,4 and 6 months. Control rats were fed on isocaloric MLD with no ethanol. At the end of the experimental feeding period, samples were fixed in Bouin solution. The sections were stained with Heamatoxylen-Eosin and Toluidin Blue methods.

Results: This study revealed that the number of mast cells was significantly reduced in the alcoholic group when compared with the control group. Mast cells also showed degranulation in the experimental group.

Conclusion: We conclude that alcohol induced the secretion of mast cell mediators in the pancreas of the alcohol fed rats.

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, kronik alkol tüketiminin sıçan pankreas mast hücreleri üzerine etkisi ışık mikroskopik seviyede incelendi.

Materyal ve Metod: Çalışmada 51 adet Wistar albino erkek sıçan kullanıldı. Deney grubu %7.2 alkol içeren modifiye diyet (MSD) ile kontrol grubu ise alkolsüz MSD ile iki, dört ve altı ay beslendiler. Deney süresinin sonunda, pankreastan alınan örnekler Bouin solüsyonu ile tesbit edildi. Kesitler, Hemotoksilen- Eozin ve Toluidin Blue yöntemleri ile boyandılar.

Bulgular: Alkolik grupta, kontrol grubu ile karşılaştırıldığında, mast hücrelerinde degranülasyon ve hücre sayısında belirgin bir azalma gözlendi.

Sonuç: Uzun süre kullanılan alkolün, sıçan pankreaslarında mast hücre mediatörlerinin salınmasına neden olarak, organdaki mast hücre sayısını azalttığı saptanmıştır.
